Investing in Volunteers
The University of Surrey Students’ Union has recently achieved the Investing in Volunteers Quality Standard, recognising the excellent work they do with volunteers.
Investing in Volunteers is the UK quality standard for all organisations involving volunteers. Managed by the UK Volunteering Forum and delivered by Volunteering England, Volunteer Development Scotland, Volunteer Development Agency in Northern Ireland and Wales Council for Voluntary Action - the award aims to benchmark the quality of volunteer management and involvement, and prove and improve the effectiveness of an organisation’s work with volunteers.
Investing in Volunteers is based on five areas; volunteer management; planning for volunteer involvement; recruiting volunteers; selecting and matching volunteers; and supporting and retaining volunteers. The University of Surrey Students’ Union was assessed against a range of best practice standards and proved to excel in all aspects of working with its volunteers.
“Receiving this award is huge for the University of Surrey Students’ Union! We work really closely with our volunteers and do everything we can to support them, so this recognition means a great deal to everyone involved at the Students’ Union.” – Clem Mulcahey Banks, Volunteering & Training Coordinator
“The Investing in Volunteers award acknowledges the University of Surrey Students’ Union as a great place to volunteer. We hope, as a result of the award, more students will be encouraged to get involved with Union volunteering.”– Peter Smeed, Equality & Diversity Officer.
What does this mean?
Over a three day period an assessor from Investing in Volunteers interviewed a number of staff members and almost 100 of our student volunteers from Freshers' Angels to the Sports Executive Committee and examined all aspects of the service we provide to our volunteers. It was a hugely positive and constructive process for all of us and we'll continue to see the results over the next few years. As a result we've come up with the following...
A promise to our student volunteers
Whether you get stuck in as a Freshers' Angel, a Stage Crew member or as any kind of volunteer through the Students' Union, then we say this to you:
We are committed to you as volunteers and value your contribution to the Students' Union
We will give you the resources you need e.g. money, materials, management and staff time
We are proud of the diversity of our community and will always support this in all our voluntary groups
We will consistently develop the roles and opportunities available to you
We are committed to protecting you from harm whether physical, financial or emotional
We will help you to ensure fair, efficient and consistent recruitment procedures
We will help to introduce you to your role, the Union, our work, policies, practices and personnel
We recognise that different groups need varying levels of support and supervision. As such, we will endeavour to tailor our service to your needs
We recognise and appreciate your involvement and all of your hard work
Stay interested, involved and in touch. Thank you.
