Hey! I'm Omar, a final-year Law student,  President of STAR Society (Student Action for Refugees), and I am currently one of the Community Zone part-time officers! For this year, I will focus on enhancing every student's experience here at Surrey, from Freshers to Postgraduate students towards integrating with the student life and the Guildford local community through fun events and promoting cultural diversity, bringing students closer to the community. Also, placing efforts to support and spread the importance of volunteering, as well as achieving the most out of the newly introduced online volunteering platform. As a Union officer, I will work with the committee to place efforts to tackle any housing-related issues, focusing on opposing any plans for unaffordable student housing and ensuring more accessibility to all students to have suitable housing options on and off-campus.

My Manifesto

Community Service

  • Support and increase the publicity of work that volunteering groups do within the community

  • Work with RAG Chair towards increasing budgets for charitable societies, and expanding fundraising activity on campus to a wider range of charities in our community and including more refugee networks.

  • Introduce an award scheme to receive recognition when specific target hours are reached on SurreyVolunteering to better promote the platform

  • Continue to support and encourage students to integrate with the Guildford community on events, shows, and cultural celebrations

  • Making use of unused spaces on campus to be offered to local residents to use outside teaching hours

  • Holding an event for February intake and exchange year students to bring students closer together

  • Promote joint campaigns with the local community on issues such as mental health

  • I aim to oppose plans for unaffordable student housing by the University, Council, or private developers.

  • Assess the possibility of students living with elderly residents for cheaper to resolve the shortfall of student housing and loneliness amongst the elderly.

  • Work with letting agencies to promote housing for students looking for off-campus accommodation, while continuing to inform students about their rights as tenants.
