Engaging students; smashing targets!

This year's target for candidates: 50
This year's actual number of candidates: 47
... But we will be running a by-election for the Events & Trading Officer position

This year's target for voting turnout: 25% (3757 votes)
This year's actual voting turnout: 31% (4790 votes!)

It was great to see so many people run in this year's elections and all but 2 part-time positions be contested (and some heavily too!). This clearly shows that these students have engaged with their Students' Union, so much so that they felt empowered to stand to make a real difference in this University for themselves  and other students in the future.

Although only 15 students could be elected out of the 47 running for these positions, the ideas that were brought forward need not be pushed aside. The manifestos that were submitted express what these students were standing for, and are each full of challenges and ideas on how to improve how things are currently done both within the University and the Union.

Last night, the Vice-Presidents and I got together to really delve into these manifestos; pulling what we believe to be some of the best points from them, and coming up with a realistic action plan. Some things we will be able to achieve before our term of office ends in July, and others we can get a start on, or lay the foundations ready for next year's sabbatical team.

Watch this space for an update on what specifics we are working on!
