There's lots of talk about Stag Hill campus, and more and more we're hearing about Manor Park: what, with the Sports Park built over there, new accommodation blocks and even the Heart + Soul social space. But what about Hazel Farm?! Who's talking about Hazel Farm? Who's keeping Hazel Farm on the agenda?
We decided it was about time we unravelled the mystery of this off-campus accommodation, and made the students who live there a priority for Union engagement and representation. On Friday night Tom, Maz and I jumped in the Flirt! car, with some sweets and a map in hand, ready to meet some of our Hazel Farm residents.
Well, I can tell you first-hand that if you've ever found yourself getting lost and frustrated on Stag Hill campus, you ain't seen nothing yet... This place is confusing! With a complete lack of signage both leading up to and on arrival of Hazel Farm, all roads called "Hamilton" close, drive or place, and house numbers in no distinguishable order, it's a challenge from the offset.
Look at the map!
... It's like trying to complete a dot-to-dot whilst spinning on your head!
It was quite an evening! A real eye-openinng experience and I must say a huge thank you to those students who welcomed us into their homes and took the time to chat to us about their experiences.
So what's next? As a sabbatical team, we will be collating our findings and the feedback we received from these students and putting together a report that we can take to the University in order to address the issues that were raised.
Watch this space.
If you live on Hazel Farm or know friends who live over there, please put them in touch with me at firstname.lastname@example.org because I would love to hear their feedback on some specific areas.
