Library Update

Additional learning space

After speaking to final year students, as well as experiencing it myself last year as a final year student, I realised there is a lack of study space for this group of students who have a large amount of heavily weighted coursework and exams. With some additional research, I made a proposal to the Library on prioritising an area for final year students.

The Library will be supporting this initiative on a pilot basis from 6 May – 20 June 2014. There will be two dedicated rooms (one without computers and one with computers) and one shared space being used for the scheme. Students wishing to take advantage of the scheme should approach the Support Hub on Level 1 of the Learning Centre where Library staff will check that they are final year students. They will be provided with a coloured slip and be advised that they will need to display this clearly at a study space in one of the dedicated rooms. Unfortunately there is no guarantee of study space or computers at this exceptionally busy time of year but Library staff will help out if a final year student would like support in using a priority space (eg if there are students studying there with no slip being displayed). We will be monitoring the scheme closely and at the end will review with both staff and students to make a decision about whether to continue and or extend for future years. The Library is encouraging all students to feed back any suggestions and comments about use of the scheme.

Noise text alert service

Following a very well received pilot of a noise text alert service in silent areas during the January exams, the Library will be rolling out this service across the whole building 24/6 from Tuesday 6 May. Students who are experiencing any problems with noise or any disruptive behaviour can text 07972218326 and a member of Library staff will respond as soon as possible. The Library hopes that the extension of this service will help students feel more supported in the building and create a more effective study environment.

Computer Availability

Finding an available computer across campus can be a difficult task, especially during busy periods. Thankfully to make this easier there is a web page dedicated to showing where there are available computers across the whole of campus. So instead of spending too long looking for a computer just follow this link and see where there are available ones http://labs.surrey.ac.uk/ .
