I started at Surrey in 2010 to study Creative Music Technology. Since finishing my PhD here, I ran in Surrey Decides (our Union elections) to become VP Voice in 2017-18 and now President for 2018-19.
As President, I lead our team of Officers here at the Students' Union. As a team, we are here to represent your views as students and make sure your voice is heard, whether that be academic issues, accommodation, facilities – everything related to your experience here.
There are 5 full-time Officers (a.k.a. Sabbs) elected each year and my team is made up of VP Support Paul Olaniyan, VP Voice Olly Shearman, VP Activity Alexa Hughes, and VP Community Gemma Paine. We all feel passionately that all Surrey students should have the best experience possible, and so we spend each day representing students to the University in committees and meetings, leading events and campaigns, supporting our sports clubs and societies, and so much more. When you have a problem with the University that you can't resolve yourself, we are here to support you and help fight your corner.
My advice to all students at Surrey is to get involved with as much as you can: join that club or society, come along on a trip, become a Course Rep or Community Rep, volunteer to be a Freshers Angel, get a part-time job, or run in Surrey Decides. It's these opportunities that will help you make the most of your time here. It's through these activities that you can find new skills and meet friends for life - trust me!
Our offices are located in the SU building, below Rubix, please don't hesitate to come and see us if you ever have an issue - or just to say "Hi!". You can also email me on email@example.com.
From all of us at the Union, have a great year here at Surrey!
