 Malnutrition in LIBERIA

Meet Darius, he is nineteen months old. Darius could be a normal 1-year-old, but he isn’t...

One hindrance to this fact is due to the presence of severe destitution that he has unfortunately been born into. As if that isn’t enough of a tragedy he is also suffers from acute malnutrition. Imagine tens, hundreds and thousands of Darius. That is the sad but ever so true narrative for TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY THOUSAND (230 000) children in Liberia. That is why, we are embarking upon a campaign to help put an end malnutrition in Liberia.

This campaign will run from the 6th of February 2017 to the 20th of March 2017. It will also consist of a Fast24 Campaign in which UNICEF on Campus Members and Students at the University of Surrey will participate in a 24 hour fast to raise funds to help overcome malnutrition in Liberia.

The moneys raised from this initiative will be sent directly to UNICEF UK to improve services to help prevent malnutrition; intensify infant and young child feeding and support services and strengthen institutional capacity on nutrition.

By being a charity society, campaigning for causes in aid of UNICEF UK is at the very heart of what we do. For a period of three months, we would be on our first campaign “EDUCATION CANNOT WAIT” from the 24th of September to the 24th of December.

One quarter of the world’s children live in places affected by conflict. During these times of hardship, children’s education get drastically disturbed and gets taken away from them.

One United Nations sustainable development goal (SDG) of 2013 is to make sure that every boy and girl gets access to complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education. However, in order to achieve this goal, there is an urgent need to raise money and awareness. Due to this urgency, UNICEF has come up with the campaign, “Education Cannot Wait: a Fund for education in emergencies.”

With one of the main problems being insufficient funding (less than 2% of humanitarian appeals), Surrey UNICEF on Campus is seeking to not only raise funds for this campaign, but also create awareness on the plight of children being affected by this crisis. The Education Cannot Wait Fund has a goal of increasing educational support to children affected by these crises to 18% in 2020 and 100% in 2030. With a funding of over $3 billion needed – there’s a huge gap needed to be filled and hopefully we’ll help in shortening the gap through our efforts in this campaign. We would then be able to help children in war torn areas such as Iraq, Chad and Syria; enabling them to receive the most powerful weapon of education, to combat the levels of distress they are been faced with.
