ArtSoc started in the house of Christopher Webb and Ben Lee as 'MArt Group' (Mini Art Group) running weekly sessions in which those interested would simply paint/draw whatever their hearts desired.
It wasn't long before the group outlived its 'mini' status, becoming too expensive and far too big to be run privately in Chris' bedroom. In search of more money and space, Chris and Ben went recruited a team and went to the Student's Union. Now, they are 'Art Society' running a weekly session on Fridays: a 'free' session in which members are at liberty to use the equipment without restraint on their creativity.
Once a month, to keep our 'M' in our name, we have a 'Mega Art Session'; a big community based activity to which everybody contributes. This could be anything to 'Paint Dart Art' to colouring the grounds outside a large block of buildings and are evidently more messy than our weekly sessions.
We're working on a collaboration with both the University Art Gallery, in an attempt to provide a platform to display members' creations, and CraftSoc, a similar society who were very supportive when we were starting up in the Uni.
At the end of the year, we plan to auction some volunteers' paintings off to new owners and give the money to charity.
We have drop in sessions on Fridays 18:00-20:00 in Lecture Theatre B. Everyone is welcome! It doesn't matter if you are good at drawing or would like to have a go, all that is required is enthusiasm! We provide art supplies ranging from pencils and crayons to water colours and acrylics. So don't be shy! Come on down and let's get our art socks on!
