University of Surrey Rugby Football Club

A  note from the Chairman: Marc 'Fragile' Stone

Now in my final year I have been a member of Surrey Rugby for four years and have seen the club grow from the brink of extinction to the outfit that it is today. We currently regularly put out two men’s teams and one women’s competing against other universities in the local area. Whether you are at a competent skill level looking for a challenge (our 1st have for adversaries sporting universities such as Chichester 1st, Portsmouth 1st and St Mary’s 2nd) or have never played rugby before our club offers the opportunity to train, learn and play in a friendly environment.

Despite having played rugby for ten years now for a variety of teams (in England, Scotland and France), Surrey is without a doubt the most welcoming of clubs I have encountered, with the social side of the game being given the due care and attention it deserves. Creating a group of friends off of the pitch presents a key advantage when stepping onto it and makes time spent playing rugby with this club even more enjoyable.

So whether you’re a seasoned veteran or looking to pick up the game it’s my pleasure to invite you to play, train or even just join in as a social member of our enthusiastic and growing club.

A note from the 2nd team Captain: Simon 'Peasle' Peasley

Surrey rugby continues to follow the ridiculous tradition of appointing its best player as 2nd XV captain. How could I not continue this long running precedent? In the beginning it was the sublime and graceful Manakin who led the troops into battle and before myself it was the mercurial Wee Man whose talent elevated his team.

Although what I have written above is not entirely true - I mean let's face it, Wee Man was and continues to be rubbish, I feel that Manakin, Wee Man and myself have a few things in common. We play the game for the love and give our all for the cause - win, lose or draw.

My personal rugby development has been a bit hit and miss over the years. I made the odd appearance for my school 1st XV at prop before coming to Surrey and doing the rounds in the pack during my first year. In my second year I started at flanker before an injury crisis forced me to jump the big divide and play at scrum-half in the backs. During my placement year I couldn't get Wednesdays off work so I made the odd invitation appearance for Stoke Park Bisons. This last year has been interesting at fly-half, with odd appearances in the centres and even the wing! I think I'm one of quite a few guys at the club to have played almost every position on the park!

Rugby has played a massive role in my university experience and I must say that I am glad with the way it all turned out. I was thrilled to give something back this year by being the 2s captain and although the season just gone could have been better results wise - their were still some massive performances from the team and quite a few of the guys have moved up to play 1st XV rugby on merit. So just to emphasise the point from a few of the other committee members - your skill level at the start doesn't matter, as long as you have the enthusiasm to improve we'll find a place for you here!

A  note from the Club Captain: Robert 'Spade' Webber

Now in my 3rd year of study with plans to do an extra year, the University of Surrey Rugby club has always been one of my main focuses away from my studies. The team has grown from barely being able to raise a side, where the club was a bit of a joke, to a team that is now committed, talented and eager for success.

Even though some players will have had more experience than others (for example I have been playing the game for ten years for such teams as Esher, London Welsh, and England South West U18), we all train as one squad that enables the entire club to grow as one. This encourages players (some, perhaps, havent played since school, or even ever at all) to feel welcomed and to have fun.

From a personal point of view, it has been useful forming a link with local sides Stoke Park Bisons and in particular National 2 side Esher, that enables members to play at weekends and to compete at a higher standard and to learn new skills. These skills can then be passed onto the rest of the players in the Surrey side.

The Rugby team has helped form many friendships with all the members of the club and really makes you feel part of your university when you represent it. We now get two mens teams out every week, and after a huge influx of girl freshers that have joined the club there is now no reason why the woman's team wont have regular fixtures next season.

The icing on the cake of this club is the social side, wednesday nights just wouldn't be the same if I wasn't part of Surrey Rugby. All sides socialise together, including mixing socials with other teams such as the Hockey club. I would recommend to anyone at Surrey Uni to be a part of the team; male, female, whatever skill level, or even just as a supporter.
