And so the time had come for the annual reunion of past Surrey Rugby players to take on the mighty youth of the current rugby team at surrey. The day was chosen as the 4th of March and fell on what was one of the wettest days of the year that had been preceded by weeks of rain. Every player from both sides, besides feeling hung-over from the annual dinner/drunken dance was worried of the match being called off. Then the news happened from the Uni Sport Grounds man that the match would not be able to be played on any of the Varsity Pitches.
However with the best thanks to
I wont lie It was one of the most muddiest games I have ever played, we even had to compare three pitches to decide which one was the least soggy. In the end we decided to play on the pitch lowest down, don’t ask why.
So after weeks of taunting friends who were playing on the opposition's side mainly via facebook, and seeing a new found anger in former surrey fly half Kenny from all the bullying, finally the game was kicked off so the war could commence. In the early stages after two years out from the game via injury old boy Animal made an impact by dropping the ball. Yet this didn’t stop the old boys sticking to their plan of mauling, keeping it tight, and pick and drives. Yet with a quick turnover whilst being pegged back in our own 22, clean breaks were able to be made by Simon, Ceri and in particular Baby Frag. The Laziness or last nights effects were shown by the Old Boys by not chasing back and an early try by Angus finishing off a Baby Frag break put the students into the lead.
Later once again the Old Boys kept to their game plan and dominance of the scrum with a pack of nearly twice as heavy as the current uni team, got the ball back into the students 22. This was followed by a typical dummy and step by Old Boy fly half Kenny skipped through the students defence to bring the scores level. Yet with all the fuss of moving grounds not anyone had brought a kicking T, or maybe he just couldn’t be bothered to get one. So with Kenny’s attempt at converting his own try via a drop kick the ball hardly bounced in the mud and rolled over the line. UNLUCKY!
The students were starved of possession throughout the match which meant some big defence by players such as Charles, Spade, and Oleg. With a game with few lineouts and many scrums, the main way for the students of receiving the ball was through turnovers, this was possible due to the students fitness in getting to the ruck first.
On the stroke of half time there was also an incident where Spade attempting to counter ruck Old Boy Jason Munday where the reply from Munday was a head butt to the face and a big evil stare in what is meant to be a friendly game, or perhaps he lost his bumbling coordination and fell forward from his body weight and used spade's nose as a steady post. Either way this meant Spade had to play the rest of the match with a blooded nose and a tissue shoved up his nose from the very helpful woman’s rugby player Verity, but also to Spade's disgust Munday was substituted off at half time, so he couldn’t get his revenge. But there is always next year.
After a the break and from substitutions such as Barney and Dan Quarm, and with Warwick Hiley moving to loose head the Students scrum became stronger and even in one case turned over the old boys scrum possession. This gave more ball to the students and enabled them to punch holes into the tired defence of the old boys. A tactic of the students all day was to take quick tap penalties from every place on the pitch in order to wear down the Old Boy’s defence. And with receiving a penalty only 10 metres out from the old boys line this was no different. Only one phase was required for Oleg to skip through the retreating old boys defence to score what became the winning try.
Later in the game with the pressure on and with only minuets remaining irrational defensive kicks game plenty of possession to Old Boys full back Athers and to prop turned number 8 turned winger??? Old Boy shaggy or at least he was standing on the wing. Shaggy (and I have been told to give special attention to this from his Old Boy team mate AJ) squandered at least two chances throughout the game, including being about 5 metres out and deciding the best option for the near 20st battering ram would be to kick through. They subsequently didn’t score.
In the closing minutes the old boys had a scrum 5 metres out. In the most important scrum of the game that was proceeded by AJ getting cramp/having a bit of a rest, the old boys drove the students scrum forward as they had done all day, with a last second attempt to stop the pushover try the students twisted the scrum and forced the scrum half to pick and go. Great work from the flankers and scrum half Ceri held the try up and turned the ball over. The ball was hoofed away, and the game was saved.
After the final whistle it was all handshakes and hugs between good friends as in the end both sides are equivalently in the same team.
The speeches in the bar was made and the dick of the day going to Shaggy, Man of the Match going to Animal who in a great effort of his come back match after what has been a very depressing two and a half years out injured. A special Mention must be given to Gabriel who turned up in a white tracksuit that ended up being very brown then bless only lasted 30 seconds before the Old Boys messed up his pretty face and had to go to hospital, welcome to the game. And finally the Old Boys Alan Haggar Cup was presented to the students captain Maximus who had some fighting talk words stating:
“ I hope to continue my hold onto this cup when I play for the Old Boys next year”
Yeah he wishes.

The last Wednesday home BUSA fixture of the season and the 2s were set to take on an LSE side that were near on points in the league. The Surrey 2s side, even though have been recorded wins in the league by other side’s pulling out, have yet to actually sing the winning ‘Oh Surrey’ victory chant this season, yet this is not from lack of heart and Surrey pride.
Throughout the game the Surrey side had the game played in the opposition half thanks to some great carries in particular by Del, Jav, and debutant Will.
Yet set plays such as the scrummage thanks to the side being a lock short caused winning first phase ball a big problem. This at different times during the match gave the likes of Olly, Suicide, Charlie, and Oleg a chance to be in the engine room, all of which are back row players with no 2nd row experience. Their time in the middle of the scrum was summed up by oleg telling myself (a player of 10 years experience and pain of the row) that it was one of the most hardest and most uncomfortable things he’d ever done. I agreed yes it is!
With the set plays of the forwards left aside it didn’t stop the back row forwards having an exceptional game of getting round the park. All the above mentioned players including the early injured Sideshow used their fitness and heart to create quick ruck ball and make attacking crash ball’s off the half backs. This was able to put the LSE players on the back foot in defence which kept the Surrey side going forward. Eventually we had a penalty 10 metres from the line, it was chosen to tap and go and the ever reliable no 7 Oleg weeved through the entire LSE pack to score a solo try. Surrey 5: LSE 0.
The game continued with the game being played in the LSE half, but when a string of missed tackles were put together LSE managed to get a score in the corner, this try was against the run of play. Surrey 5: LSE 5
Injuries occurred to many players in the team, but this didn’t harm the team to a big extent thanks to a very big impact by ‘Afro-Caribbean Society Footballer’ Del. Within seconds of being on the pitch in front of the surrey crowd he let the opposition know he was on the field by a crunching tackle. Suicide Also kept the tempo of what housemate Sideshow had created on the blind side when he suffered from a recurring shoulder injury.
In the 2nd half problems got bigger in first phase possession as Jake had to retire due to cramp, this meant a big impact by ball carrier Dan Evans came on. Yet now the lineout didn’t function as the team now had to rely on Dan Quarm to throw in, but bless he hadn’t thrown in regularly for two years.
Later and once again even though Surrey pride’s defence had been holding up so well and a long stint of domination in the opposition half, another couple of missed tackles was able to let the LSE team score what became the winning points Surrey 5 : LSE 12.
Yet surrey, determined not to give up, gave it their all right up to the final whistle. With it clear that 1st phase ball was a problem, it meant that all penalties were quick tapped, this created urgency and a real will to win. Right up to the final whistle Surrey pushed back LSE into their 22 thanks to a string of tapped penalties and quick ruck ball, only for the lack of time to save LSE from what should have been a Surrey 2s Win.
The 2nd Team can hold their head high after this game, they gave it their all in this game, and had a true will to win, it was only for a few basic errors to let them down in the end.
Man of the Match was given to Fresher Olly for his work in the back row from many crash balls and desire to get the breakdown and ruck out,
When Dick of the day wen to "Strangely enough" to Mini D. In three years of Rugby at this uni, the 2nd team has never attempted to kick a penalty at goal, this mainly is down to the former captains Manakin and Weeman believing that they are like the Barbarian’s side. Yet with what could have been the winning points and to let my opinion finally be proved right to take the points on offer, Mini D missed it. YOU C**K!!!!!!!
But after all of the game it was nice to see a sociable 3 way Boat race (a relay drinking game) taking place in the bar VS the opposition and the Surrey Hockey team, even if injured boy Dominic lost it for us by drinking about as fast as a member of the cheer leading team.
