► Representation & Welfare Unit

What is RAWU?
The Representation and Welfare Unit is the name of a service, which the Students' Union provides for all students at Surrey University.

Who works there?
The two elected officers: Education Sabbatical, Nick Entwhistle and the Welfare Sabbatical, Natalie Forrester. Both officers work alongside the Student Support Coordinator, Lauren Aliverti and the Representation and Development Manager, Kath Jones.

Where is it? The RAWU offices are based in the Activities Centre in the Students' Union. The Activities Centre can be accessed via the door by Pizzaman or through the main Union building.

How do I contact them?
We operate an open door policy, which means that you can pop in to the Union at any time and if we can't see you straight away, we will be able to book an appointment within the next couple of days. Alternatively you can email us or ring on the following …

Natalie Forrester - VP Welfare 01483 68 (9228)
Nick Entwhistle - VP Education 01483 68 (3953)

So what's the difference between the roles?
The Education and Welfare Sabbatical roles are elected to represent you, the students. This means that it is their responsibility to help you get your voice heard within the University, on any issue presented by the student body. They also work with the many different communities at the University to enable a broad
spectrum of interaction and support for all.

Our Student Support Co-ordinator is RAWU's front of house, and Lauren will be more than happy to meet with you to discuss any problems that you may be having within your academic or personal life. Lauren will be able to advise you how the RAWU can assist you with Academic Appeals, Complaints & Greviences or refer you to another service.

The Representation and Development Manager is there to make sure the work of the RAWU continues to develop.

Who else can help me?
Emma Beauclair is the Representation and Development Administrator and can be contacted if you need help getting appointments or just need someone to sign post you in the right direction.  Email here.
Kath, Lauren, and Emma support the Sabbatical team, providing them with up-to-date information about National policies and advising on matters relating to education and welfare, whilst managing the operational duties of the RAWU.

When is it open?
The core hours of this department are 9am to 5pm, although it is possible to make an appointment outside of office hours if time is a constraint.

How does the RAWU differ from the Universities Care Services?
We are completely independent from the University. The Sabbaticals at the Students' Union are the only people who can represent you collectively. The Care Services specialise in different areas that we do not: Financial advice/ assistance (SAIS), Counselling service, careers advice … however, if you are at all unsure of exactly what services we have on campus or who it is most appropriate for you to see, we can easily advise you.

What issues can they help with?
In brief, we can help you with any concerns that you may have, whether or not this is in person or by acting as a sign posting service, directing you to other relevant individual's/organisations. We can support you when approaching the University, by helping writing statements, attending meetings with you as a representative and chasing up action. Basically if you have any problem however big or small, if we can't help, we'll know someone who can!
