► Captains Guide

University of Surrey (Mens) Football Club

TEAM CAPTAINS GUIDE

 1.       The general guidelines apply to all Team Captains regardless of which team you are running.

2.       Currently the club operates teams on a Saturday and a Wednesday. From season 2008/09 we shall be fielding Saturday teams in the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) Division One and Division One Reserve Section and the Guildford & Woking Alliance Football League (GWAFL) Division One and 4 teams on Wednesdays in the inter-university British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) football championship.

 3.       As a general guide, the SCIL(W) and GWAFL season begins in early September and ends by May the following year, whilst in BUCS the season normally starts in October and, dependent upon how well the team does, will finish in March of the following year.

 4.       As a general rule you will be involved in the following:

a.     Team selection

b.     Training

c.     Weekly Team Captains’ meeting to select the relevant team

d.     Collection of match fees from players/paying the referee

e.     At least one captain will attend the monthly Committee meetings

f.     Minibuses/travel to matches

 5.       TEAM SELECTION

You and your joint team captain pick the team, with the assistance of the team coach. Player availability will be discussed at the weekly team captains meeting together with the club captain, which will normally be on MONDAYs after training at Varsity. At least one team captain from each team will be required to attend this meeting.

 6.       TRAINING

You will want to keep fit and be coached like the rest of our players, so you have a commitment to be at training each week – whether on MONDAYs, THURSDAYs or possibly FRIDAYs – at VARSITY. Training is normally on the Astroturf between 6pm and 8pm.

 7.       WEEKLY TEAM CAPTAINS MEETING

As mentioned in 6 above, this meeting is important because it will discuss player availability and development. Team selection will be guided by any comments on players, or tactical considerations, that the coach may have. However, team captains are also the team managers and the bottom line is – YOU PICK THE TEAM.

8.       COLLECTION OF MATCH FEES

Another very important duty: collecting the subs from players and making sure you pay the referee his/her fee before the match at HOME games. The Treasurer will give you a finance form. This needs to be completed for HOME each match as it contains the receipt for the referee to sign, when you pay the fee (currently £30).

9.   MINIBUSES/TRAVEL TO MATCHES

You will need to complete a booking form and a ‘trip form’ which are both on line on the USSU web site. The booking form is straightforward. The 'Trip Form' is a list of players who will be travelling in the minibus. The trip form needs to be completed and submitted to the union at least 3 days before the weekend match.

You collect the keys for the minibus from Security at Senate House. You will be required to put fuel in and to leave the tank full when you return. Keep the fuel receipt because the USSU finance office will need it and you will be able to claim the money back. No receipt no repayment; it’s as simple as that.

Wednesday BUCS matches: the USSU office books your minibus – check with them to make sure you have one booked for away matches, preferably before the day of travel. If a minibus is not available, your team will need to travel by public transport (NOT by taxi, however) and provided tickets are retained, or players have a receipt you will be able to claim the money back from USSU.

When travelling by public transport, YOU as team captain are responsible for the team’s behaviour: make sure no-one causes trouble or gets into it!

CLUB SUPPORT

Besides any officer of the club, e.g. Chair or Treasurer, the Club Captain is also there to help and support you. It is hoped that kit management will also be part of the club captain's role with effect from season 2008/09 - in which case Team captains will need to liaise on matters of kit collection/washing etc.
