Gavi - Your Trans Rep
Name: Gavi
Course: Social Psychology (Postgraduate)
Year of study: Second; First of PhD
Personal statement: I am thrilled to be an international postgrad on the MSc in Social Psychology and I plan to continue on to doctoral studies at UniS. I am delighted to be the first student to serve in the Trans Rep position at Surrey. I have past experience founding and directing a regional non-profit organisation overseas that provided multiple services for people of trans, genderqueer, and intersex (T/GB/I) experience. A sample of my related work: support group facilitation; medical triage; bilingual patient advocacy (English/Spanish); co-directing a peer advocates program with a clinical supervisor; co-authoring a book chapter on trans-related bullying in schools with a child psychologist; designing curricula and providing continuing professional education for medical and mental health providers, and university and school staff; serving on a regional task force on LGB/T/Q/I youth; advising a Hate Crimes Task Force on trans-inclusive legislation; and providing trans health and sexuality workshops. My goal is to be a strong voice for concerns that you might not feel comfortable voicing publicly, due to being stealth or other concerns. Please feel free to email me if I can help! I'm happy to advocate for you in a sensitive, confidential manner with administrators, health services, counsellors, lecturers, parents, or other students. I will not disclose your history or status without your consent. I respect your right to identify as a man or a woman, with or without referencing your trans experience, or as trans, bigender, agender, genderqueer, or any other identities. I can also help if you want support or advocacy related to intersex issues, and I'm a Spokesman on Multicultural Issues for Organisation Intersex Internationale.
