This website is dedicated to all existing and potential students of the University of Surrey Karate Club.

I hope that you find the information below useful, however if you do have any questions then please email me.

BACKGROUND

Karate is one of the most popular martial arts in the world. Orginating in Okinawa, Japan and commercialised by such films as The Karate Kid and actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The word "Karate" is formed from the two words "kara" and "te" meaning "empty" and "hand" respectively. So the literal translation of "Karate" is "empty hand", symbolising that its practitioners are unarmed and use their hands and feet for blocking and striking.

TRAINING SESSIONS

At the University we practise Shotokan Karate. This particular style emphasises powerful linear techniques and deep, strong stances. Shotokan Karate focues equally on punches and kicks and defending them with blocks.

Training sessions are split into three disciplines: kihon (basic techniques), kumite (sparring) and kata (predefined sequence of techniques).

HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY

The Karate Club here at the University is the longest standing martial arts club. We have two Senseis (teachers), one of whom is a 4th Dan and has been teaching Karate for more than 25 years.

We are a member of the KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain), the most popular single-styled association in GB.

We have a wide range of grades: from absolute beginner through to black belts, and the classes are split accordingly. We are a friendly club and welcome new faces, and training with us will improve your fitness and confidence so why not come and try us out and learn some self-defense?!
