► HRB Plans

The HRB is the small venue type room underneath Rubix. Many of you will know it as 'Youngs Kitchen'. Once upon a time this venue was used as a small disco for events not large enough to fill the main venue, however nowadays it is in a sorry state, and rarely used.

The Students' Union has commisioned the architect who transformed a similair enviroment for Leeds University Union last year, with much success, and they have produced an initial set of visual proposals.

The idea is to use the room as much more of a social space, with less emphasis on alcohol sales. There will still be a kitchen and food provision, as well as a bar, however the bar area will not be extended. The existing DJ booth will be converted into seating space, as well as installing disabled facilities. The new area will also allow wheelchair access to the bottom section for the first time. The walls will be fitted with plasma displays which can be used for watching sport, general TV or console gaming.

The outside walls will have large glass sections added to let natural light into the room.

These plans have been refined from an original set, and we would now like to share them with the wider student body for your feedback. If there is anything you don't understand about them, then please feel free to pop into the Union for a closer look, where we will have them on display

These new designs are intended to mimic a domestic living space on a large scale. There is a glass corridor leading into the 'kitchen area' as you might find coming home, where you can all sit around the over sized 'kitchen tables' after having something to eat, you then move into the 'living room' where you can sit on the comfy seats and watch telly.

The tables gradually get taller as they move down the room, eventually morphing into the light fixtures. In a similar way, the lighting gradually gets higher, before flipping over and is mirrored in the shape and colouring of the seating. There is a small private area (currently the DJ booth) where you can sit and 'peek out' through the gap in the wooden walls into the 'living room'
