The aim of this society is to hold regular formal debates in the British Parliamentary style, similar in makeup to the Model United Nations system. With a view to form teams which will compete with other university debate teams at Inter Varsity level.

The Society was ratified at Society Standing on the 29th January 2008, and its first Annual General Meeting was held on the 1st February 2008. The AGM was resounding success- with Jack Brockless, Justin Waite, Heidi Birchall and Sam Jones being voted in as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treaurer respectively.

So far the Society has held a number of practice debates in various locations across the University. The Motions for these practices have so far included:

  • 1st Practice (1/2/08): "This House Would Compromise Liberty for Security."
  • 2nd Practice (8/2/08): "This House Fears The United States"
  • 3rd Practice (13/2/08): "This House Believes That The British Parliament Should Reflect The Composition Of The Society It Represents"
  • 4th Practice (13/2/08): "This House Believes That Peer Pressure Is Tobacco Companies' Biggest Salesman"
  • 5th Practice (20/2/08): "This House Proposes That The House Would Overthrow Regimes That Support Terrorism"
  • 6th Practice (22/2/08): "This House Proposes That A Woman Needs A Man As Much As A Fish Needs A Bicycle"
  • 7th Practice (5/3/08): "This House Believes the Lisbon Treaty Should Not Be Ratified Without the Consent of the People"
  • 8th Practice (5/3/08): "This House Believes That Iran Poses A Threat to International Security and Peace"
